About the position

The City of Virginia Beach's Internship Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to apply and utilize acquired knowledge in their field of study. Eligibility requires that applicants must be currently enrolled students in an associate's, bachelor's, master's degree, or PhD program and be in good academic standing as determined by their school, college, or university. Applications received will be considered for Spring and Summer internship opportunities across various departments including engineering, information technology, library, human resources, business, communications & media relations, and finance. Interns will engage in tasks such as working on projects, assisting with day-to-day operations, and attending meetings, with opportunities for site visits and stakeholder interactions to learn how the City serves its citizens and tourists.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up, collections, and maintenance of various types of mosquito traps
  • Mosquito speciation and preparation of specimens for arboviral isolation
  • Collection and identification of mosquito eggs & larvae
  • Collection of blood samples from sentinel chicken flocks
  • Care and maintenance of the sentinel flocks and other related tasks
  • Assist with enhancing wellness initiatives, new hire fitness evaluations, and recruit physical training sessions for police and fire
  • Attending fire station and police precinct wellness visits
  • Leading morning or evening workout sessions for incumbent first responders
  • Assist with data collection and entry
  • Minor housekeeping duties
  • Preparation of water and/or sanitary sewer rehabilitation plans and construction documents
  • Reviewing plans, sanitary sewer defects videos, contracts, and permits
  • Researching files, records, plans, deeds, plats, and easements
  • Performing basic calculations and computations for water and sanitary sewer systems
  • Performing field work for projects including taking photos, recording measurements, etc.
  • Preparing cost estimates
  • Creating work orders for construction
  • Preparing and updating databases and tables
  • Compiling data for projects
  • Assisting project management engineers with routine duties and assisting survey crews or construction inspectors in the field
  • Updating stormwater models and model analysis
  • Field investigation for inspection and inventory of City infrastructure assets, including storm pipes and structures
  • Assisting staff with the administration and review of CIP projects
  • Reviewing site plans, roadway plans, stormwater plans, bridge plans, drainage calculations, pavement design calculations, street closure applications, specifications, and permits
  • Performing field site evaluations
  • Ensuring compliance with plans and specifications
  • Assist staff with operation and maintenance functions related to pump stations, ditches, lake dredging, pipe work, and/or street sweeping

Requirements

  • Degree seeking student majoring in Entomology, Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science or related field for Mosquito Control Biologist Aid / Assistant Internship
  • Graduate level student working towards degree in exercise physiology, kinesiology, or related field for Health & Wellness Internship
  • Degree seeking student currently enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering, engineering technology, architecture, or construction management program for various engineering internships
