About the position

The Fish Culturist position at Valdez Fisheries Development Association, Inc. (VFDA) offers a unique opportunity to work in one of the most scenic locations in Alaska, specifically at the Solomon Gulch Hatchery. This full-time, exempt, salaried role is designed for individuals who are passionate about fish culture and have a strong background in Pacific salmon husbandry. The successful candidate will work under the general supervision of the Hatchery Manager and Assistant Hatchery Manager, performing a variety of fish culture duties that vary with the seasons. Each Fish Culturist will be assigned specific areas of responsibility, which may include egg take, incubation, rearing, harvest, and laboratory work. The role requires independent judgment and performance in initiating and implementing hatchery projects, processes, and schedules, as well as supervising fish technicians assigned to their projects. The Fish Culturist will be responsible for preparing feeding and rearing schedules, supervising feeding activities, and maintaining optimal water conditions for fish incubation and rearing. This includes cleaning ponds, tanks, and work areas, as well as establishing fish loading densities and monitoring transport systems for fish. The position also involves conducting biological studies, performing examinations for diseases, and supervising laboratory duties. The work environment is physically demanding, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects, tolerate cold and wet conditions, and perform tasks in low light and high noise levels. The role is essential for enhancing salmon fisheries and developing renewable fisheries resources in Prince William Sound, contributing to the economic development of local fishermen.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare feeding and rearing schedules, supervise and/or perform necessary feeding activities.
  • Supervise and participate in egg taking, incubation, and various fish marking techniques.
  • Maintain and adjust calculated quantities, temperatures, and dissolved gas levels of water supplies for incubation and rearing units.
  • Clean ponds, troughs, tanks, incubators, screens, and work areas.
  • Establish fish loading densities and prepare and monitor systems for the transport of fish to remote locations.
  • Perform gross examination and necropsy of fish for diseases or nutritional disorders.
  • Operate and adjust hatchery apparatus such as electronic measuring devices and scales.
  • Participate in conducting various biological studies such as rearing and migration studies, marked fish recovery, and plankton measurements.
  • Supervise laboratory duties including maintaining chemical records and lab equipment.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Hatchery Manager or Assistant Hatchery Manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable fisheries or related field (direct related experience may be substituted).
  • Demonstrable knowledge in Pacific Salmonid culture is required.
  • One year of experience in a similar position or two years in a lesser position in a hatchery with increasing responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of electronic spreadsheets and word processing is desired.
  • Current driver's license is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to swim is desired.
  • Experience with electronic measuring devices and scales.
