Definition
The General Maintenance Worker is a temporary seasonal employee of the Kenai Peninsula Borough and works in the Maintenance Department, typically during the summer months, when needed. This is a semi-skilled maintenance position. The employee performs manual labor to help maintain the Borough and School District's buildings and grounds. The employee may also perform work on specialized projects and occasional tasks to support the work of other departments.

Minimum Qualifications

1. The applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
2. High school diploma or GED.
3. The applicant must have a current and valid driver's license. Use of personal vehicle to travel to work locations may be required.
4. The employee must be able to work a flexible work schedule, if required.
5. Must be able to fly in small planes into remote areas.
6. Must be able to be out of town for an entire work week.
7. Applicant must possess working knowledge of methods, techniques, materials, and equipment used in general maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.
8. Ability to safely operate and maintain small and mid-sized tools and equipment.
9. Ability to follow oral and written directions, schedules and clearly articulate work related communications.
10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
Essential Functions

1. May perform duties of various trades including but not limited to painting, electrical, electronics, HVAC, general maintenance and auto shop
2. May perform maintenance duties associated with the restorative painting of commercial buildings.
3. Perform routine building, systems and machinery upkeep and maintenance tasks.
4. Perform maintenance duties including light construction, plumbing and carpentry work.
5. Assist with repairs, installations, maintenance and troubleshooting electrical and electronic devices, apparatuses, equipment and other electrical and electronic installations.
6. May assist the mechanics in repairing motor vehicles. Assist with scheduled automotive preventative maintenance and service, such as engine oil and filter changes, chassis lubrications, tune-ups, tire changes and the replacement of batteries, hoses and lights.
7. May be required to operate mid-sized equipment such as platform lifts, boom lifts, skid steers, compactors, various powered equipment and drive Borough vehicles to job sites. Training shall be provided.
8. Operate small equipment and hand tools such as shovels, picks, chainsaws, drills, trimmers, brushes, rollers, sanders, airless sprayers and sandblasters etc.
9. Clean, maintain, and organize tools, equipment, shops and vehicles.
10. Inform superiors of problems such as broken equipment, vandalism and potential safety hazards. Communicate with supervisor when certain tasks cannot be completed, particularly before accepting new work assignments.
11. Safely handle chemicals, vehicles, tools and work equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and best practices using protective equipment as required.
12. Ability to work with others and deal courteously and effectively with the public.
13. Perform tasks with minimal or no supervision.
14. Attend department training programs.
15. Have regular, reliable and predictable attendance at work.

Environmental Conditions: Duties are performed primarily outdoors and sometimes under adverse weather conditions. The employee must be able to do strenuous work in all kinds of weather and on surfaces at, above, or below floor level.
Work conditions may include exposure to noise, slippery surfaces, dust/dirt, fumes and foul odors. Physical exertion is regularly required. The employee may be exposed to dust and other irritants and toxic/poisonous substances. Personal protective equipment is provided and must be used in accordance with best practices, federal and state laws, and Borough policies. Most duties are performed in and around Borough facilities and properties including lawns and buildings. Inside work is limited but is usually performed in buildings that are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated.
